Chicago, IL | July 19-22, 2022
8th International Conference on Computational Social Science
The International Conference for Computational Social Science (IC2S2) will be held at the Harper Center of the Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago, July 19-22, 2022. IC2S2 has emerged as the dominant conference at the intersection of social and computational science, bringing together researchers from around the world in economics, sociology, political science, psychology, cognitive science, management, computer science, statistics and the full range of natural and applied sciences committed to understanding the social world through large-scale data and computation.
The conference will begin with a one-day session of tutorials in a range of social and computational methods, and also a “datathon” (July 19) for students and scientists to collaborate and compete on a complex, data- and computation-driven research challenge. This will be followed by a full-scale three-day conference (July 20-22) featuring research and researchers from around the world, across a broad range of relevant fields, and working on all areas of computational social science to advance its many frontiers.
Unlike important social computing and associated computer science conferences, the IC2S2 community actively balances and maintains a conversation between social and computational scientists which integrates technological advances and opportunities with social scientific rigor and insight.
THANK YOU TO OUR 2022 CONFERENCE SUPPORTERS!
COVID19 and Remote Options
At this time, we plan to gather in Chicago for our first in-person annual conference since 2019. Read more about our COVID19 policies and options for remote participation.
This convening is open to all invitees who are compliant with UChicago vaccination requirements and, because of ongoing health risks, particularly to the unvaccinated, participants are expected to adopt the risk mitigation measures (masking and social distancing, etc.) appropriate to their vaccination status as advised by public health officials or to their individual vulnerabilities as advised by a medical professional. Public convening may not be safe for all and carries a risk for contracting COVID-19, particularly for those unvaccinated. Participants will not know the vaccination status of others and should follow appropriate risk mitigation measures.
Please check this website for updates on streaming and COVID-19-related accommodations.

The Charles M. Harper Center is the global headquarters of the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, home to our faculty, leadership, and many of our administrative, program, and research center offices.
The Chicago Booth campus is a one-of-a-kind, state-of-the-art location offering students and researchers an amount of support and resources unmatched in the world of business school education.
Since its inception in 2015, the Annual Conference has been organized by an informal group of scholars with a shared vision of the emerging Computational Social Science as a theoretically coherent and practically useful interdisciplinary field. In preparation for the 2022 Conference, this group has established the International Society for Computational Social Science (ISCSS), which will ensure that the Conference continues in perpetuity, protect its brand, and maintain its standards. The registration for IC2S2-2022 will include the ISCSS membership for one year.
The Knowledge Lab
The explosion of digital information offers an unprecedented opportunity to study the dynamics that shape human understanding, investigation and certainty.
Our researchers are developing new Big Data, machine learning and crowd-sourcing approaches and techniques to efficiently harvest and share knowledge and judgment from experts, people, articles, preprints, software, patient records, artifacts, videos and sensors; learn how knowledge is made, used, certified and forgotten; represent, recombine and generate knowledge in powerful ways; and Improve knowledge generation, representation, management and innovation practices everywhere.
Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation
The Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation is defining a new field of research and practice to advance a more sustainable and equitable future. This field —urban science — is the systemic and computational study of how cities work, grow, and develop. By harmonizing complex ideas from different scholarly disciplines and seizing the availability of novel data, we’ve designed a new, interdisciplinary framework for unveiling fundamental knowledge about urban places and the world’s 4 billion urban inhabitants. Our new education programs, training experiences, and human-centered research engage a community of practice through local partnerships and a diverse knowledge across geographic and cultural contexts, lived experiences, and history to accelerate sustainable urban development around the world.
Center for Applied Artificial Intelligence
Algorithms fuel our modern economy and underlie myriad decisions made by businesses and organizations throughout society. AI and machine learning are central to how the world does business and how humans understand the world.
At the Center for Applied AI, we incubate transformative projects that fundamentally shape how humans use AI to interact with each other and the world. Our innovative research investigates how AI can best be used to augment human decision-making and improve society.
